Enjoyed my time with the local Malay people, and also the Chinese heritage people. Enjoyed a house blessing, and wore the lion costume.
I lived in Seria, the oil town in the south of the country, where the British military also have a base. We had a very active running club and on the days I was feeling fit, joined the super fast cyclists for afternoon rides to Kuala Belait, or a weekend ride up Labi Road, a very long road with very few cars that cuts through the forest and farmland and up the hill into the middle of the country.
The accommodation was the best I have enjoyed during my Shell career. A two bedroom house at the end of a road, with a large balcony looking across at a wall of green trees. Macaques and Silver Leaf monkeys would grace the scene and the end of workday fly past by the hornbills was always special.
