Ape species include humans, gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, gibbons, and bonobos. In evolutionary and genetic terms, ape species are much closer to humans than monkeys are.
Extinction in the wild is likely in the next 10 years for Sumatran orangutans and soon after for Bornean orangutans. Both the Sumatran species (Pongo abelii) and the Bornean species (Pongo pygmaeus) are classified as Critically Endangered according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. (the Orang-Utan project).

Orang-Utans (person of the forest when translated from Malay) are arboreal animals, preferring a life in the trees rather than moving along the forest floor. Moving along the forest floor presents a risk to their health, as they can pick up bacteria or be caught in traps.
