Sukau

History of Sukau. Being about 60 miles upriver from the ocean, along the Kinabatangan River, this is a muslim town. Enveloped by the adhan (call to prayer) five times per day is a spiritual experience, even for the most staunch agnostic tourist. Arabic traders in the 14th century found themselves sailing around the shores of Borneo, with boats and rivers inland, it seemed natural for Islam to spread upriver along the river systems. Later Christian missionaries would need to push deeper in to the hinterland to find listeners of their theology. As a fishing based society, the wild boar population in the reserves surrounding the town is very healthy.
